Joints are critical parts of the body for motion and movement. A joint is any place where two bones meet. Ball and Socket: This joint is exactly as it sounds: a round part of the bone that is shaped like a ball and the socket that holds the ball in place. Hips and shoulders are ball and socket joints. This type of joint is one of the most mobile joints and allows for circular movements, rotations, and bending and flexing extensions.
Pivot: The neck is a perfect example of a pivot joint. This joint has the ability to rotate or perform a circular motion but with no gliding. The neck can move back and forth as you turn your head side to side or you can roll the pivot joints in the neck.
Gliding: A gliding joint, like the wrist, can move in several different directions. In the case of the wrist, the carpal bones are like two surfaces sliding smoothly along one plane.
Hinge: A hinge joint is just like the hinge of a door that allows for flexion and extension along one plane. Just as a door opens and closes on a hinge, our hinge joints go back and forth on one axis. The bones with a hinge joint are rounded on one side and concave on the other, which allows for the reaching or extension motion. Examples of a hinge joint are elbows, toes, and fingers that can be bent and straightened on a hinge joint.
Saddle: When you think of a saddle joint, think of how a saddle slides over a horse. That is how the bones of a saddle joint fit together, hence the name. The saddle joint can move in many directions but without sliding. The thumb is an example of a saddle joint that goes in many directions, yet the joint stays put and doesn’t slide.
Condyloid: Condyloid joints, also known as ellipsoidal joints, can flex and extend with some limited rotational movement. The radio-carpal joint, where the end of the forearm meets the wrist, is an example of this joint. It can bend and straighten with some rotation as well.
