A recent study out of Australia reported that children who are born with the help of medical interventions, including C-sections, delivery with vacuum or forceps assistance, or use of hormones to speed up labor, are at a higher risk for short-term and long-term health concerns.  The study was conducted at Western Sydney University and followed 500,000 women who had low-risk, healthy pregnancies from 2000-2008.  Researchers studied the interventions used and the effects they had on babies within the first 28 days of life, as well as the effects on the children all the way up until they were 5 years old.

Study Findings

The study concluded that children who are born with birth interventions are indeed at risk for more health problems in life.  Specifically, jaundice and feeding problems were among the top health concerns researchers noticed in the first 28 days for babies born with interventions rather than through spontaneous, unassisted vaginal delivery.  Moreover, babies born by Cesarean section were more likely to have lower temperatures that required medical intervention.  These are concerns that parents are often made of aware of but opting for or allowing a C-section, but they must consider the risk-reward factor when making an informed decision.

While short-term health concerns have been studied before and are no secret to medical practitioners, the long-term health risks have never been studied at such lengths in the past, and so parents weren’t able to be educated on the potential long term-risks of birth interventions.  Children who were delivered with birth interventions were studied until the age of 5 and found to be more at risk for obesity, diabetes, respiratory problems like pneumonia or bronchitis, and eczema.  When parents are made of aware of these long-term health problems related to birth interventions, the natural question is “What can we do to prevent this?” Many parents-to-be assume that there is nothing they can do to avoid birth interventions as doctors and nurses often deem them absolutely necessary during delivery. While you can discuss your desire to avoid any birth interventions with your delivery room nurses and doctor, you can also be proactive throughout your pregnancy to best prepare your body for delivery to help you avoid even a mention of these birth interventions.
