Allergies and allergic diseases are becoming more common problem for people today. Nasal allergies alone affect roughly 50 million people in America today and this number is steadily rising. Allergies are normally first noticed at a young age, and children are especially prone to suffering from allergies with around 40% experiencing allergy symptoms. This makes allergies the most common health issue for children in the U.S.

Allergies, though thought by some to be trivial, can have a severe impact on an individual’s quality of life and present themselves in a variety of different ways. Hay fever is the most recognizable allergy and typically shows itself in itchy and watery eyes, itchy or sore throat, sneezing, coughing, rash, and more.

How Are Allergies Treated?

Medication, sprays, and creams are common ways that the symptoms of allergies are managed, but other treatments are said to reduce symptoms as well. One of the effects of chiropractic care noticed by many patients is a reduction in allergy symptoms, and cases have illustrated that chiropractic can have a significant impact in treating and managing the symptoms of allergies, especially in a pediatric setting.

What Causes an Allergy?

Allergies manifest themselves in a variety of ways, including sneezing, coughing, itching or rashes. At its base, an allergy is a hypersensitive reaction to a substance or stimulus. Your body views the allergy as a threat and then reacts by producing symptoms to combat the stimulus. Your immune system is the key when it comes to allergies, as it produces an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE) when it encounters the substance you are allergic to.

Despite significant research, the root causes of allergies are still poorly understood, but various factors have been shown to be linked to allergies, including stress and anxiety. Stress can play a major role in the severity of how your allergies present themselves, with research showing that stress has a direct link to causing and even prolonging the symptoms of allergies.

Studies have shown that the immune system and nervous system are interdependent and have direct effects on one another. It makes sense then, that through effective treatment and correction of the nervous system, positive results will be seen, and, in fact, studies have shown this to be the case.

Chiropractic Care for the Treatment of Allergies

Through focusing on the body’s link between the nervous system and immune system, chiropractic care uses gentle adjustments to increase and restore the communication from the brain to the nervous system. A by-product of clearing and restoring these pathways is the regulation and strengthening of the immune system, which lowers the antibodies that cause the allergic reaction.

Since it is well documented that there is a strong link between stress and allergic reactions, it should be noted that any attempt to reduce stress will be beneficial in the treatment of allergies and their symptoms. However, allergies do not solely come from stress, and it is great news to allergy sufferers everywhere that chiropractic treatment can help seriously mitigate the severity of symptoms of allergies.

These results are achieved by careful assessment of the spinal column to determine where potential malalignments or subluxations may be present.

Case Study

A stark example of the effectiveness of pediatric chiropractic care can be seen in a case study of a young boy suffering from symptoms of allergies that were severe enough that he was regularly missing school. Low force adjustments, the same type used by Dr. Grant Lisetor at our practice in Charlotte, NC, were used over a period of two weeks. At two weeks, symptoms were reduced, and within one month the option to cease treatment was given due to total remission of symptoms. Semi-regular “upkeep treatments” can be performed to keep symptoms at bay, and in this case, that is what the parents of this child decided to do.
