High blood pressure is ravaging our society today. About 75 million American adults have high blood pressure—that’s about one-third of our adult population. In 2014, over 400,000 deaths were linked to high blood pressure, and only about half of those suffering from it have it under control.

High blood pressure can lead to heart disease and increased risk of stroke, both of which are in the top five leading causes of death in the United States. While several lifestyle choices and medical conditions can increase the likelihood that a person will have high blood pressure, most medical doctors cannot pinpoint the exact cause of it.

Hypertension and Misalignment of the Spine

Thankfully, hypertension experts and chiropractors all over the world have contributed to studies that link the atlas bone, or top vertebrae, to high blood pressure, giving those suffering from hypertension hope. The atlas is just under the brainstem, which is at the base of the brain and directly affects many functions in our bodies, including having almost complete control of our cardiovascular system. Some research has suggested that the atlas affects blood flow around the base of the skull, particularly in the arteries. A misaligned atlas can make the arteries contract, leading to the blood pushing against their walls with more force and leading to higher blood pressure.

Clinical Studies to Support a Direct Connection between Chiropractic Care and High Blood Pressure

Many studies done over the past several decades have given skeptics a glimpse into the very real possibility that chiropractic can lower high blood pressure, and here at Greater Life Chiropractic, our Charlotte chiropractors are seeing evidence of that! The most popular clinical trial that confirmed this link between chiropractic adjustments and lowered blood pressure took place in 2007 at the University of Chicago. It followed 50 patients over 8 weeks, some of whom were receiving cervical adjustments and some of whom were receiving sham adjustments, or placebo adjustments. Although the relationship between hypertension and abnormalities around the atlas have been known about for over 50 years now, the results of this study were still shocking.

The study showed that the adjusted patients’ blood pressure dropped by an average of 17 points! Medical doctors confirm that it would take two blood pressure medications to achieve a drop in blood pressure as significant as that! And even better, absolutely zero adverse effects were reported. This study, along with countless others, prove that with regular chiropractic adjustments, a reduction or absence of hypertension pills may be a very real possibility for many in the future!

It is important to note that a minor atlas subluxation can contribute to many malfunctions within the body without ever causing pain. So if you’re under the assumption that a lack of pain is equivalent to a lack of a problem, please know that isn’t the case. Even the smallest misalignment in your vertebrae can bring about a myriad of problems, but a chiropractor in Charlotte is more than willing to offer you a preventative care plan to help bring your body to a whole new level of optimal health, particularly if you’re suffering from high blood pressure.
