Meniere’s disease affects the inner ear, specifically the vestibular system, which contributes to our sense of balance and spatial orientation, especially in regards to our coordination and movement.  The symptoms of this syndrome can affect hearing, vision, balance, and spatial orientation.  The combination of unwanted symptoms of Meniere’s disease can be quite debilitating.  But don’t lose hope; a Charlotte chiropractic can help!

Symptoms of Meniere’s Disease

Several different types of symptoms are associated with Meniere’s.  The first main symptom is vertigo.  Vertigo can cause a spinning sensation that leads to dizziness and can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.  For those with Meniere’s, the effects can be quite severe, with vertigo symptoms lasting up to 24 hours and causing sudden falls called “drop attacks.”  Another symptom of this disease is hearing loss.  The longer Meniere’s disease goes on, the worse hearing loss can get.  At first, low tones may disappear, followed by the higher tones, leaving sufferers with only the middle tones.  A hearing test can show just how far the disease has progressed.  Tinnitus, or ringing of the ears, is another common symptom associated with Meniere’s.  Tinnitus can sound like a constant ringing in your ears, such as what you’d experience after being at a loud concert, or it can sound more like rushing water or a buzzing sound.  It can come on suddenly and be a very frustrating feeling.  Another symptom associated with Meniere’s is a feeling of pressure inside the ear.  Because the disease is related to too much fluid in the ear, it can make the ear feel very full.  This can also cause migraines, neck pain, TMJ, and other related issues.  While this can all sound very overwhelming, Dr. Grant Lisetor of Greater Life Chiropractic has helped others reduce or alleviate symptoms of Meniere’s and he can help you too.

How Can Chiropractic Help Alleviate Meniere’s Disease?

The systems of the body, including the vestibular system, are all connected to the central nervous system.  They rely on the central nervous system to send and receive messages.  However, spinal misalignments, or vertebrae that have slipped, twisted, or turned out of place, can cause nerve interference that disrupts the proper function of the central nervous system.  This, in turn, can affect other systems.  Symptoms of Meniere’s disease can worsen because of spinal misalignments and lack of proper nerve function within the vestibular system. Charlotte chiropractor Dr. Grant Lisetor will carefully check for spinal misalignments and correct them with gentle adjustments.  Dr. Grant will specifically focus on the C1 and C2 vertebrae at the top of the spine.  Adjustments to this specific area, which is located close to the ears, will allow for improved blood flow to the brain and proper drainage of the ears, helping to alleviate uncomfortable symptoms of Meniere’s disease.  Chiropractic care combined with other natural remedies such as low sodium diets, nutritional changes, proper hydration, and stress coping mechanisms can vastly improve the overall quality of life for those with Meniere’s disease.
