Chiropractic Red Flag #5: Y-Strap Adjustments

The Y-strap adjustment is a gross global manipulation that has been made famous by YouTube videos. Not only does it give chiropractors a bad name by making people terrified of ever getting adjusted, but it is also incredibly dangerous and not even slightly beneficial.

In our current series on chiropractic red flags, this one is a big one. At Greater Life Chiropractic, our doctors want the profession to be as principled and focused as possible, but more than that, we want everyone who interacts with chiropractic to have a positive and safe experience. We have a handful of problems with Y-strap adjustments that we’d like to explain.

Traction Turned Trauma

The Y-strap was originally created by a highly regarded chiropractor who intended it to be used as a traction device. This means it was meant to gently and slowly stretch the spine to release pressure on the spinal cord and encourage blood flow for optimal healing. However, it has been used for different purposes, including a drastic and abruptly powerful yank on the spine. This massive amount of movement causes a huge dopamine rush in the body. It feels great, and chiropractors who do this adjustment claim that this rush is “switching your power on” or “years of toxins leaving your body.” What it actually is, however, is trauma. It’s a powerful hit on the nervous system that is far more harmful than beneficial.

Risky and Ineffective

The main role of a chiropractor is to remove vertebral subluxations, or spinal misalignments. A Y-strap adjustment does not do that. Instead, it grossly mobilizes every vertebra at once. Not only is this ineffective in promoting spinal health, but it’s also quite risky. Rather than improve spinal alignment and proper spinal curvature, it can actually reduce the necessary front-to-back curves and cause damage in the spine.

Adrenaline-Inducing

As we mentioned above, a Y-strap adjustment might feel fantastic. But as we all know, just because something feels good doesn’t mean it actually is good. The rush of feel-good hormones makes your body think it’s experiencing healing, encouraging you to return to the chiropractor for more adjustments. Unfortunately, however, it’s not helping much, if anything, and it can actually lead to more harm than anything else.

Not Specific or Scientific

Chiropractic adjustments should be based on the central nervous system and the interference it’s experiencing due to misalignments. They should be very precise and specific, and they should always be based on scientific principles and proven techniques. Y-strap adjustments are not taught in any technique classes in chiropractic school, and there is no evidence that they are effective. Additionally, they are anything but specific. The gross manipulations of Y-strap adjustments are such a far cry from what chiropractic should be that we cannot say enough how much of a red flag they are in the world of chiropractic care.
