What Are Desiccated Discs?
Your spinal discs sit between the vertebrae and act like shock absorbers for your spine. In a healthy disc, the inner core (nucleus pulposus) is rich in fluid and surrounded by a tougher outer layer (annulus fibrosus). Over time—or with added stress—these discs can lose hydration, flatten a bit, and become less flexible. Desiccation means the removal of moisture from something, so this process is what’s meant by “desiccation” of the disc.
The loss of fluid means the disc isn’t able to absorb shock as well, and the surrounding spinal joints and nerves have to pick up more of the load.
Causes and Symptoms of Desiccated Discs
Disc desiccation can happen for a few reasons, with the most common being aging and the natural wear and tear it places on your discs. But lifestyle factors can also be an issue, especially things like carrying extra weight, sitting a lot, having poor posture, or frequently bending and lifting improperly.
When a disc begins to desiccate, you might notice stiffness in your back or neck. You might feel a dull ache in one spot or feel stiffness when you move in certain ways. In some cases, if the disc height decreases and nearby nerves become irritated, you might experience tingling, numbness, or radiating sensations into your arms or legs.
It’s worth noting that just because an MRI shows disc desiccation doesn’t automatically mean you’ll feel pain or that it will become a serious problem. Many discs show signs of fluid loss yet don’t cause major symptoms.
