Dysautonomia and the Stress Response

The central nervous system, composed of the brain and spinal cord, is one of the most important systems in our body as its job is to control the function of all the other systems. In conjunction with the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system controls all the nerve responses in the body.  As part of these systems, the autonomic system’s primary purpose is to control all of the automatic responses that our body does without thinking.

If you break down the nervous system even further, the autonomic system is composed of two separate parts, the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system. The job of the parasympathetic system is to create a “rest and digest” response that increases health and wellbeing, promotes long-term health, and aids in repairing the body.  On the opposite spectrum, the sympathetic nervous system is the stress response.  When we encounter stressful situations, our body jumps into action with the “fight or flight” response of the sympathetic nervous system.  The body will shut down normal functions to focus on this response which increases heart rate, raises blood pressure, and causes excess sweating.  While these two systems are both necessary and should function by complementing one another, they may become unbalanced over time, causing health issues.  If your body seems out of balance as if one system is working in overdrive while the other isn’t working efficiently, then a visit to Charlotte chiropractor Dr. Grant Lisetor can help restore balance to these systems.

An Imbalance of the Autonomic Systems Leads to Dysautonomia

When there isn’t a proper working balance between the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system, this can lead to dysautonomia.  Dysautonomia isn’t usually diagnosed alone but is often recognized in conjunction with other health concerns such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, or multiple sclerosis.  Because systems are working in overdrive, it can be difficult for the body to regulate heart rate or blood pressure or even do simple tasks such as repair itself during rest.  Because of this, serious health problems can arise.  Those with dysautonomia may notice symptoms such as fatigue, fainting, dizziness, heart palpitations, brain fog, anxiety, or panic attacks.  In order for the body to function at healthy levels, it is important to get the stress response under control.  Dr. Grant Lisetor has the experience and knowledge to help you reduce your stress response and decrease symptoms of dysautonomia.
