Dr. Houston Rutledge
Dr. Houston was born and raised in the small town of Cedartown, Georgia. From early childhood, he was raised by his grandparents. Being raised on a farm by his grandmother and a grandfather who spent 30 years in the Air Force, followed by another 27 years working at the local hospital equipped Dr. Houston with the values, skills, and habits that have helped him through various circumstances in his life, including his journey to becoming a chiropractor.
Growing up, Dr. Houston was involved in several sports; however, the two he loved most were baseball and rodeo, where he did some competing in team roping. When he was in middle school, he had the opportunity to become a student athletic trainer for his local high school which is where his love for healthcare began.
At the age of 14, Dr. Houston began preaching at churches around his hometown, which led to his eventual pursuit of education to prepare for full-time vocational ministry. He attended Shorter University in Rome, Georgia, where he earned his Bachelor’s in Liberal Arts with concentrations in Christian Ministry, English, and Art.
In September of 2011–while at Shorter–he met Sarah; they went on to marry in June of 2013. It was through her that Dr. Houston would be introduced to the world of chiropractic. Beginning at age 14, he suffered from hemiplegic migraines, which caused symptoms that varied from numbness and tingling to total paralysis of his left side.
From the time of his first adjustment–given by Dr. Jeremy Hess–he felt relief from both a migraine he was experiencing at the time, as well as the other related symptoms. In the 12 years of being under chiropractic care, Dr. Houston has only experienced a handful of these episodes. Once introduced to chiropractic, Dr. Houston was fascinated by not only how the body worked, but by the fact that there was a whole field in which the only goal was to remove interference from the functions of the body, and to let the body heal as God had created it to do.
Having begun down the path to ministry in undergrad, Dr. Houston attended The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in pursuit of a Master of Divinity degree; however, his heart for healthcare led him to pause his theological studies about halfway through. He then began taking prerequisite courses that would have put him on track to apply to medical school to become an M.D. At the time, his goal was to become either an orthopedic surgeon or a neurosurgeon. As he spent more time under chiropractic care, he began to realize that if he entered the medical field–regardless of his intentions–he would likely become part of a system that often addresses symptoms while missing the root causes of disease. In the spring of 2017, Sarah became pregnant with their first child, which also gave him a new perspective when it came to how much of her life he would miss if he continued down the path of medical school.
It was these circumstances that eventually led Dr. Houston to apply to Life University’s College of Chiropractic. In December 2021, he graduated Magna Cum Laude as a Doctor of Chiropractic. He would not have become the doctor that he is today without the help and support of several mentors including Drs. Jeremy and Amanda Hess, the late Dr. Mark Jones, Dr. Mike Sommers, and Dr. Grant Lisetor.
Since graduation, Dr. Houston has continued to train to become the best pediatric and family chiropractor possible including training in the Webster Technique with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, and receiving a Certificate of Proficiency in Pediatric and Family Chiropractic Care from the Pediatric Experience.
Dr. Houston currently lives in Indian Land, South Carolina with Sarah and their three precious children, Turner, Arlington “Arlie”, and Hank. When he is not serving at the office, Dr. Houston loves spending time with his family, exploring outdoors, training at the gym, attending rodeos, and reading all kinds of books; his favorite genres are theology, health, science, and personal development.
So far, in his post-graduate education journey, Dr. Houston has achieved the following accolades:
- Certified proficient in pediatric and family chiropractic care – Pediatric Experience
