What Causes Frozen Shoulder—and What You Can Do About It

If you’ve ever woken up with a shoulder that feels stiff, sore, and just won’t move the way it used to, you might be dealing with something known as frozen shoulder. This condition can sneak up gradually, starting with minor aches and progressing into serious limitations on your range of motion. It’s frustrating, uncomfortable, and can make everyday activities—like reaching, dressing, or even sleeping—feel like a challenge.

What Is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder, formally called adhesive capsulitis, happens when the tissues around the shoulder joint become thickened and tight. They then form adhesions and can eventually limit movement. Over time, the joint capsule becomes inflamed and stiff, and moving your arm can become painful or nearly impossible.

There are three stages of the disease, and each one usually lasts a long time before the next one begins.

  1. Freezing – Shoulder movement starts to become painful and limited.
  2. Frozen – Pain may lessen, but stiffness remains or worsens.
  3. Thawing – Motion gradually begins to improve, but this is often slow and can take months.

It often shows up after an injury, surgery, or extended period of immobility—such as wearing a sling or recovering from illness. But sometimes, it can appear without a clear trigger, especially in people over 40 or those with certain metabolic conditions.

Why It Happens

While there isn’t always one clear cause, several factors seem to play a role in frozen shoulder:

  • Disuse or immobility: If the shoulder isn’t moving regularly—due to injury, pain, or recovery from surgery—the surrounding tissues can tighten up.
  • Inflammation: Inflammation in the joint capsule can thicken connective tissues, which makes motion harder.
  • Posture and spinal alignment: Poor posture and spinal imbalance can lead to uneven tension in the shoulders and upper back, which eventually causes restricted shoulder movement over time.

How We Can Help at Greater Life Chiropractic

At Greater Life Chiropractic, we take a whole-body approach to care. If you’re dealing with frozen shoulder, Dr. Grant Lisetor will assess not just the shoulder itself, but how your spine, nervous system, and posture may be contributing to the problem.

We use gentle chiropractic adjustments to restore better movement through the spine, especially the upper back and neck—areas closely tied to shoulder function. When the nervous system is working well and posture improves, the body is better able to release tension and inflammation.

In addition to adjustments, we may guide you through movements and stretches designed to gradually restore shoulder motion without overloading the joint or causing more discomfort.

Let’s Get Things Moving Again

Frozen shoulder doesn’t have to leave you stuck. With the right support and a natural, movement-focused approach, your body can begin to regain function and flexibility without relying solely on pain meds or invasive procedures.

If you’re looking for a Charlotte chiropractor who works with you and listens to your concerns, Dr. Grant Lisetor and the team at Greater Life Chiropractic are here for you. Schedule your first appointment today to get started!
