Chiropractic Red Flag #6: Essential Oils and MLM Products
Greater Life Chiropractic always has been and always will be a principled office. This means that all we do is chiropractic. Chiropractic is what our doctors studied in school, it’s our area of expertise, and it’s what we focus on day in and day out, whether at the office or not. We consistently take continuing education courses in chiropractic, and we associate ourselves with networks of chiropractors to better serve our communities.
We’ve been on quite a journey with our Chiropractic Red Flag series, and this week we’re focusing on essential oils and multi-level marketing products. Let us start off by being perfectly clear: we are not against using essential oils or being part of a multi-level marketing product or company. However, as chiropractors, we want to focus on our craft, and we believe that a chiropractor selling essential oils or another MLM product is a red flag that should alert you to the quality of care you might receive in that office. Here’s why.
Financial Aspect
If a chiropractor is not offering enough value to his practice members through adjustment, he’s likely struggling financially. With the low buy-in amount of many MLM opportunities, many chiropractors will jump into selling a product in their office to make additional money. We’re not saying that making more money is bad, but it shouldn’t be the driving force behind all the decisions that a medical professional is making. Care should be at the forefront of the practice, and if the care provided isn’t bringing in enough money, something else is at play that needs to be addressed.
Lack of Expertise
We’ve gone back to this phrase countless times in this blog series: we’re not experts in MLM products. We’re not experts in beauty supplies, dietary supplements, essential oils, household products, weight loss products, and so on. We’re experts in chiropractic. We know that most MLM companies will educate their sellers on the products, but that still doesn’t make them experts in their usage. Essential oils are a great example of this. There are several oils that cannot be put directly on the skin safely without a carrier oil, and only certain oils can be ingested safely. Do you want to risk getting information from someone who’s not an expert in that area? We don’t. If you want to buy any of the MLM products listed above, we support you. But we also support you finding an expert in that field to purchase it from so that you are safe and using the product properly.
Undue Pressure
Have you ever been in a situation where you felt pressured to buy something? Or have you ever felt bombarded with constant suggestions and questions regarding buying a product? It’s not fun. We don’t like feeling undue pressure to purchase something, and we don’t want our practice members to feel that pressure either. We want you to look forward to coming in for an adjustment, not dread the barrage of questions you might be asked about purchasing MLM products.
Divided Focus
We believe strongly in putting all our time, effort, and energy into becoming better chiropractors. That’s why we do continuing education courses, attend chiropractic conferences, and consistently train our team. If we were selling MLM products, a great deal of our time would be devoted to that, and our focus would be divided. We want to give our first and best to our practice members, so we maintain a laser focus on chiropractic to better serve our community.
