Sometimes, pain can become unbearable. Whether you were injured, have chronic pain, or are experiencing new pain for an unknown reason, it can be difficult to face each day when pain is ravaging your body. When this happens, many turn to prescription medications.  For extreme pain, physicians may prescribe opioids such as hydrocodone or methadone.  Significant pain or a specific injury or illness may also require surgery, and prescribing opioids for pain after a surgical procedure is common practice for pain management.  But the problem with prescribing opioids is that they are highly addictive.  The statistics don’t lie: One in every four persons prescribed opioids for pain struggle with addiction. Every day, more than 1,000 people are treated in the ER for opioid use.  Opioid addiction is so severe that it has raised national awareness as an epidemic that is taking the country by storm.  Because of this awareness of opioid addiction, there is a greater push for non-drug approaches to pain management.  Research suggests that natural, noninvasive chiropractic care is an alternative option to taking opioids for musculoskeletal pain that can decrease opioid use and addiction.

Non-Drug Options for Pain

Back pain is one of the most common complaints in our society today.  Chronic back pain can result in dependency upon medication to find relief.  The problem with strong pain medications such as opioids is that one experience can be life-altering.  Many people share their stories of struggling with back pain or undergoing back surgery only to come away addicted to opioid pain medications.  They once lived a normal life and held a normal job, only to have all that stripped away because of highly addictive opioids.  What we are learning is that there are other methods for treating neck pain, back pain, or any other type of chronic or extreme pain.  Regular visits to a Charlotte chiropractor can do just as much for easing pain as opioids, without the unwanted side effects.

What Can Chiropractic Do for Pain Management?

Leading healthcare professionals are now pushing for non-medicinal options to be at the forefront of treatment options, well before prescription medication.  Studies show that those who undergo natural pain management options, such as chiropractic care, are 49% less likely to use opioids for musculoskeletal pain.  Why is this?  Neurologically-based chiropractic care is a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on improving the function of the central nervous system to improve whole body health.  Unlike medicine, chiropractic care seeks to treat the root cause of pain, not just the symptoms.  For instance, chronic back or neck pain are often linked to spinal misalignments.  Once these misalignments are removed through gentle adjustments from Charlotte chiropractor Dr. Grant Lisetor, nerve interference is removed, messages to the brain can once again get through uninterrupted, musculoskeletal pain is decreased, and the body can function optimally.  Additionally, with non-pharma options, such as chiropractic care, there is a 28x reduction in the need for spinal surgery as well as a 64%-90% reduction in prescribing opioids for pain.

Before turning to opioids for pain relief, first consider non-pharmaceutical chiropractic care as a natural solution for pain.  Contact Dr. Grant Lisetor of Greater Life Chiropractic to schedule your first visit.
